Why VIDYA Copilot writes its replies on the phone

The teacher app has no internet permission. Here is what that design choice means in practice, where the phone's own voice tools fit, and why it still needs a separate check.

The situation

Many Indian schools have patchy connectivity, and teachers’ phones are personal devices with limited data. A tool that only works when the network is good will be unreliable in exactly the moments when a teacher needs it.

The design choice

VIDYA Copilot’s AI is saved on the Android phone and writes replies there. The app has no internet permission at the operating-system level. Android will not let it connect, so there is nothing to misconfigure and nothing to forget to switch off.

From the operations side, which is the part of the company COO Vaibhav Jain is responsible for, this is as much a reliability decision as a privacy one. A reply that depends on a server has a long list of things that can go wrong between the question and the answer. A reply written on the phone has a much shorter list. The product documentation describes the engineering behind this as model fine-tuning, measurements on actual phones and language testing, with experiments that did not meet the bar being stopped.

What stays on the phone

  • The question and the reply. They are written and read on the device.
  • The teacher profile. Name, school, classes and subjects are saved on the phone. The teacher app does not link to the school connection used by the separate student test app.
  • The memory warning. It is part of every reply in the regular app.

What sits outside the app

This is the part that is easy to overstate, so the website says it everywhere voice is mentioned.

When you tap the microphone, the app uses the phone’s own listening tool to turn speech into text. When spoken replies are on, it uses the phone’s own speaking tool to read the text aloud. Those are separate services from the phone maker or operating system. They may need the internet unless the right language files are installed, and they have their own privacy settings.

So the honest statement is: the app can write without internet; voice needs a separate check. The practical test is simple. Turn off the internet on the intended phone, ask a question by voice, and listen to the reply. If both work, the language files are there. If not, you know before you depend on it.

Speed, with the right caveats

In one reported test, with the app already ready, speech began about 434 milliseconds after the question was sent. That did not include the time taken to listen to the question. The newer AI version was also tested on an OPPO phone. These are encouraging numbers from one phone, not a promise that every reply on every phone will start within a second. Low-cost phone testing is not complete, and exact phone requirements have not been supplied.

Why it still needs checking

Writing on the phone does not make a reply correct. The current regular app answers from what its AI has learned. It does not look in your textbook first; that feature was tested and switched off because adding textbook facts did not improve replies enough. In one reported test, about one in ten replies was hard to make sense of.

That is why the on-phone design and the memory warning are two halves of one idea. The first makes the app dependable to reach. The second makes it honest about what you reached.

Takeaway

If connectivity in your school is unreliable, an assistant that writes on the phone is worth a look. Check voice with the internet off, ask about the topics you actually teach, and treat every reply as a first draft.

Read the plain-language how it works page, or check your language and phone.
