VIDYA Copilot: overview
What it is: VIDYA Copilot is an Android app that helps Indian school teachers ask questions about school topics. The teacher can type or speak a question, choose Hindi, Marathi or English for the reply, and read the reply or hear it aloud. The teacher checks the reply and decides whether to use it. The app currently appears on the phone as VIDYA Shikshak; the website uses the name VIDYA Copilot for the same product.
Brand line: A helping hand for teachers. You make the final decision.
Audience: Indian school teachers (current focus especially Classes 6–8), academic coordinators and school leaders considering a small teacher trial. It is not a student app; VIDYA AI is a separate student app with its own website.
Status: Early version. Not yet on the Play Store. Access is arranged by contacting the team. Prices for teacher use, setup and school trials have not been announced. No adoption figures, testimonials, certifications or partnerships are claimed.
How it works
- The AI model is saved on the Android phone and writes replies there. The app has no internet permission.
- Replies come from what the AI has learned; the app does not search the teacher's textbook. The textbook-grounding feature was tested and is turned off in the regular app.
- Every reply carries the warning: "Answered from memory, not from your book — worth checking."
- Voice input and spoken output use the phone's separate listening and speaking services, which may need the internet unless the right language files are installed and have their own privacy settings.
- Each question is treated as new; the app does not remember earlier questions.
- The teacher profile (name, school, classes, subjects) is saved on the phone. The app does not connect to any school system.
Reported test results (one set of tests, one test phone)
- With the app already ready, speech began about 434 ms after the question was sent (listening time not included). Tested on an OPPO phone. Not a guarantee for every phone or question.
- About one in ten replies was hard to make sense of; worse on unfamiliar topics; Marathi replies needed the most improvement.
- Low-cost phone testing and screen-reader accessibility checks are not complete. Exact phone requirements have not been supplied. An iPhone version is not confirmed.
Not available in the regular app
- Using textbook facts to write replies (built, turned off).
- Suggested marks with a marking guide (built for testing, turned off; not reliable enough yet).
- Reading photos of handwritten answer papers (tests not good enough).
- Class study reports or a school information page (planned).
